Grade 8 Poetry, October 2006
The assignment was to use the words below and write a poem that personifies Winter:
crushed, breathed, sparked, embraced, ancient, glared, cruel, powerful.
When winter breathed upon me
with her cruel and ancient breath
It sparked in me a not so fond memory
of the feel of the powerful cold as it
embraced and slowly crushed me in her
all consuming arms, while upon
me her blinding, white gaze glared.

Winter came and breathed on all the land
She embraced death and became so cruel
She crushed everything in her sight
Nothing could escape her powerful eyes as they glared
Even though she is so ancient
She still sparked the deadliest season.

Winter crushed the spirit of warmth
and sparked that of the cold,
Embraced the fun activities of the children
and breathed a powerful breath on the old.
Its cruel threats were known by all
as well as its ancient gaze,
It glared at those wishing it were over
and lengthened its never-ending days.

The ancient witch breathed,
And embraced the land with her icy touch.
She crushed the greenery with her powerful jaws,
Her cruel gaze withers life.
Sparked by her awakening,
The ices come.
She glared over the frozen wasteland
From her frosty throne,
And dreaded the warm kiss of Spring.
