MY LIFE IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Chad Martin, age 6, Kindergarten (dictated)

I like Papua New Guinea. It is a big open area where I can run and play. I like Jeffrey. He is a black person who lives here in PNG. He is funny. He is in my class and comes to school with me. He's my friend. I like going to town because there are restaurants that have really yummy food. NCA is fun because I learn how to read. I like P.E. I like to come to school here because in America I am home-schooled. I feel good because I have a teacher and can be in school. I like swinging on the swings. I like to have computer time. I like it that I can walk to school and I am not late.

ABOUT PAPUA NEW GUINEA

My name is Robbie Jayelle Bagley. My birthday is on November 15th, 1998 and I live in PNG. PNG is a very nice place but it does get hot easily. I am a 1st grader and my teacher's name is Mrs. Morton. I'm sad that she had to leave her family and friends but I'm thankful that she did so that she could teach me. I found out that I can read better than I thought I could because I practiced so much in the reading festival. I think that reading is so much fun! My favorite thing to do is math minute. I like school. PNG is a beautiful place. I like living in PNG.

Karina Jansma, age 6, Grade 1

This is my first year at NCA. I made lots of friends. I learned a lot of things. My teacher is nice and helpful. I'm thankful that she came from the states to teach first grade. NCA is a great place for me!

GOING TO THE RIVER

I like to go to the river because we play games and swim down the river. Sometimes we catch fish. Also we find bird nests. The birds get so angry. Then they fly away and squawk a lot. Sometimes we catch the mother bird. She squawks but we tie a rope on her leg. Then we let her go. At night when it rains we can hear the water crashing. The river is my favorite place to go. THE END.

PUKAPUKI

I am writing about Pukapuki. I see lots of village houses and pigs playing outside. I can smell roast pork and I get a little hungry. I also love the bananas and oranges that grow there. The kids there like to play soccer. I do, too. We play with a small rubber ball. One of the boys cracked it open to see what was inside it. Pukapuki is a great place.

NTMA'S HANGAR

When I went to the hangar I saw planes. I like the King Air that Mr. Douglas flies. The colors of this plane are white and red. Red is my favorite color. Mr. Douglas is a good pilot. That is why I want to be a pilot.

Joanna Schroder, age 8, Grade 2

THE TRIBE

Pukapuki is a beautiful place. There are flowers and lots of beautiful butterflies there. It is very hot in Pukapuki. We go swimming a lot in the river. The airstrip is a long way from the house. That is why we don't go to the airstrip a lot. I like to go and watch the ladies make sacsac. It is food, but it looks like glue. I don't really like to eat it but I do at parties. We also have parrots in our back yard. The parrots eat wild apples in our yard. We call these apples lawlaws.

IN HIA

I like Hia. I like going to the river. The kids make long boats of leaves and I throw big rocks at them and they sink. I like my bow and arrow. It is very fun shooting by lots of chickens. They start squawking a lot. All the kids like to play soccer. We made up a game called "Mate." You have a ball and people try to tackle you but if people say, "mate" you pass it to them. Hia is very, very fun.

Michael Burleson, Age 7, Grade 2

I like to listen to the birds. I love to listen to the sound of them, too. I have some pets that are a dog and three guinea pigs. They are very, very cute and fun to play with.

WHAT IT IS LIKE AT INTERFACE

At Interface there are many things you can see, hear, smell, and feel. At the Gass' house I can see lots of cabins. The cabins are for all of the students. I hear the beautiful songs of the wonderful birds. There are King fishers, parrots, and wagtails. There are many things to smell, too. Like the sweet smelling flowers and the food cooking for the students in the big kitchen. I really love the breeze that comes everyday is as soft as a bunny's fur and cools the air. That is why I like to visit ITF.

Lauren Averhart, Age 7, Grade 2

BENA BENA

Bena Bena is the place where I live. It has a lot of pretty yellow flowers. Also, Bena Bena has a lot of national people we call friends. Auntie Quala and Uncle Doskey live near us because we built our house near their house. Our partners are the Lees and Fosters. They live nearby. I love the village of Bena Bena. It is fun to live there with my Dad, Mom, and two brothers. I also have a cat named Athena and two dogs named Odie and Rio and two snakes. We all love Bena Bena.

Savannah Hunter, age 8, Grade 2

LIFE IN A DORM

It is fun living in a dorm. I live in the Hunter dorm with nine dorm students and my family. I have five dorm sisters and four dorm brothers. When they smell the beautiful, yummy smelling cookies, all the boys come and get at least one. There is always a lot of action around our house. Next year we are going to be moving. We aren't going to have a dorm then and we don't know where we are going to stay during that year. But my mom says that in about a year and a half I think we are going to America. I can't wait.
