Numonohi Christian AcademyFAQ'sFrequently Asked Questions about NCA1 Demographics of Students and Teachers1.1 What countries are your students from? NCA has nearly 150 students representing eight different countries for the 2008-2009 school year. Here's a breakdown by country:
We have had students from Belgium, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Germany, Ghana, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, and Switzerland. 1.2 Are there teachers from many different countries, too? Yes, while most of our staff members are from the USA, we also have teachers from Australia, Belgium, Canada, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and the UK. 1.3 Are all of your students from NTM families? No. About 73% of our students are from NTM. Another 15% come from other mission agencies in the area such as ABWE (Association of Baptists for World Evangelism), MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship), and CRMF (Christian Radio Missionary Fellowship). 8% of our students are PNG nationals, and 1% are from expatriate families here in PNG on business. While most of our teachers are with NTM, we have had teachers from ABWE and MAF. 1.4 How many students live in the dorms? We have run from one to five dorms, depending on the current need. In 2008-2009 we plan to run three dorms (approximately 30 students) meeting the needs of missionary children from tribal locations. The other students either live here on our NTM mission center (Lapilo) or in the surrounding area. 2 Teaching at NCA2.1 What computer resources are available at NCA? We have a fully equipped computer lab and offer courses in computer literacy and typing. Most classrooms and the library have at least one computer with internet access. Recent improvements in our internet reception have provided us with a fairly high-speed internet connection most of the time. 2.2 What other technology is available for teachers? We have several TV/VCR's teachers can reserve and use for their classes. Projectors for computers are also available. Overhead projectors and photocopiers are also heavily utilized. Departments are also free to purchase additional teacher aids and materials as needed with the money allocated to them in their yearly budget. 2.3 What is your curriculum like? Traditionally our school has followed a U.S.-based curriculum drawing textbook material from a variety of sources, both Christian and secular. We seek to meet individual needs of students from other countries on a case by case basis. 2.4 What about science courses? We have a fully equipped science lab for our Biology, Physics, and Chemistry courses. The lab is furnished with individual counters with running water, microscopes, Bunsen burners, and other tools. 2.5 Do you offer music or band? Yes! We have a music teacher on staff so we are able to offer music to the elementary grades and various band programs in the secondary grades. A wide variety of band instruments can be rented by students for small fee. 2.6 What foreign languages are offered at NCA? When staff is available we offer two years each of Spanish and French. Melanesian Pidgin, a trade language of this area, is offered to our 7th and 8th grade students. Students are required to take two years of one of these foreign languages (or an equivalent) in order to graduate. At present, there is no language laboratory equipment available. 2.7 How is your school year divided? The school year begins in late July. There are four 8 or 9 week terms separated by three or four week breaks, with an 8 week break after the school year is over. The longer breaks between terms allow students who board here at NCA to spend more time with their parents out in the tribal locations. 2.8 How do NCA staff members raise financial support? NTM missionaries are not salaried. In faith, they look to the Lord for provision of their financial needs. They are encouraged to share about their ministry and be open about their needs. Support comes from sending churches, with additional help from other churches and individuals. 3 Athletics3.1 What extracurricular sports do your students participate in? We have varsity programs in both boys and girls soccer, volleyball, basketball, and softball. Varsity teams participate in tournaments held once or twice each term. These tournaments include national schools from the Eastern Highlands Province along with Ukarampa International School, another MK school run by SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics). In addition, the center often organizes informal sports activities such as roller hockey and rugby. 3.2 What athletic facilities are available at NCA? We have a soccer field, gymnasium, outdoor sports complex (tennis, volleyball, and basketball), and fitness / weight room. |
