Life in PNG, an MK's perspective

By Abbie Bittner

My experience in PNG has been only positive. I moved here half-way through my 8th grade year from America. It was when I came here that I learned to live my own faith. My family originally moved to a mission base, Hoskins, in the PNG islands region. My parents attended orientation there and I left them after about 6 months to come to live near Goroka. Here I attend school at NCA and live in a family-style dormitory. While I was here, my parents left Hoskins and moved to a tribe on the PNG island of New Ireland. There they built our home and are now learning the native language. Dad learns culture and language, while my mom home-schools 3 of my 4 younger siblings.

NCA has been another amazing experience for me. Things are busy and you get easily involved in a lot besides school. Since I have lived here, my walk with God has tremendously grown. I have learned to depend lots on God because of the fact that I am away from family.

Dorm life is a total BLAST! You always get new dorm brothers and sisters every year. You get to know them well in a short amount of time. The dorm has also been a great experience for me and for one of my younger sisters.

Through NCA I have been very blessed. There have been too many times where people with full schedules already have had to fill in to teach Bible or math classes. These missionaries have a big enough handful without school classes to deal with. But I'll tell you what, these guys are amazing and do so-o-o much for us kids that we might be learning and growing in all areas. They sacrifice a lot for us. We are so-o-o very thankful for that - and we thank everyone who is involved with us in making our lives possible at Numonohi.

PNG in general has been a paradise that I have gotten to witness day in and day out. Though I have only been here for two years, I can tell and recommend for everyone to get over here and experience PNG! I feel sorry for anyone who will never get a chance to experience just a piece of what I, we, live in everyday.

Sometimes it takes a while to adjust to life in PNG away from your home country. Here's a story of how one of our MK's dealt with that challenge.
